A few common questions

Yes, please ask.

I'm not Aboriginal — can I learn Gathang?

Some of our community classes are open to allies and respectful learners. We always prioritise mob, Elders, language speakers and emerging teachers — and we ask all learners to come with humility and respect for cultural protocol. Get in touch and tell us about yourself.

Can we use Gathang words for our school, business or council programme?

Use and naming protocols are a key part of our Goal 1 work, and we connect with local governance groups to make decisions together. Please contact us before using Gathang words publicly — we will guide you through the right cultural process.

Where do I find a community language class?

Weekly community-led classes run across the Gathang footprint. The locations rotate based on community demand. Email admin@gathang.org.au with your nearest town and we'll connect you with the closest class.

Are you offering cultural consultancy services yet?

Cultural consultancy is a Year 3 objective (3.1). We are currently scoping language translation, cultural capability development, on-Country workshops and professional development for educators and organisations. Get in touch if you'd like to be on our early waitlist.

How can I support the Language and Culture Centre?

A permanent home for our Centre is our anchor goal for 2032. We welcome conversations with funders, philanthropic partners, and supporters around the world. We're also pursuing freehold land within the footprint — please reach out to our CEO directly.

I want to engage a Welcome to Country for my event. Can you help?

For a Welcome to Country or formal cultural consultation at an event, please contact us with details (date, location, audience, purpose) at least four weeks in advance. We can connect you with the right Elder or community member, depending on the Country.
